The much anticipated “Promised Land” album by none other than the Idols season 14 winner Yanga Sobetwa, is finally out. The young and talented singer whose voice is somewhat similar to that of Zahara knows how to bring people together with her music. Yanga won the 2018 Idols competition and she released her album after six months after her win with Gallo Record Company.
The gospel-pop/urban-pop singer first came into the limelight during her idols South Africa competition in 2018. “Gospel is amazing, and I’m called to preach the gospel through song” she said (Mofokeng, 2019). She launched her debut album “Scars” while she was still on the show. After her debut single she released another hit single titled “Promised Land” which later became the name of her album. Yanga has accomplished a lot as a young artist from winning the Idols competition to releasing an amazing album. Yanga is not scared to take on big names in the industry, with a powerful voice that matched perfectly with legends like the Soweto Gospel Choir and Amanda Black in her song “Promised Land”.
Promised Land is the first track and it was a second single that she debuted on the track is an inspirational song that leaves you motivated and inspired to do some good in the world. This track encourages people to spread love and stand against hate. The words” Sasaza uthando, uyibone emaphupheni akho” means that spread love and see it in your dreams. This is an impressive song that could really bring about a very big impact to the world. Not only does this song speak to people but it also speaks to God, it calls unto God to help open people’s eyes. This is heard when Amanda Black sings “soon enough you see the silver lining”, (Promised Land, 2019) which says that have hope there is light at the end of the tunnel.
The title track “Little Girl” is a message of encouragement to herself through her struggles that she faces as a girl and other girls out there who may feel like their lives are falling apart. “Ndidiniwe ukuzama everyday intwenye”, which means I am tired of trying the same thing every day and she would like some peace in her life. Yanga is trying to tell the world that there is more to her than just a face and what people choose to see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sniQKlvHTyE
Then there is Catch Me whichis a love song that she feature Paxton, this track is more pop and it is out of her usual gospel-pop type of music that she is used to. This is song that talks about a lost love and how they would have always been together, she is asking the guy to her if she were to fall.
Never afraid is a another inspirational song, but unlike promised land this song is a prayer to God to asking if it is true that he is always there no matter what ever you are going through, be it school or work related. This track is a song that one can turn to during hard times, it is a comfort song that tell you that God is there and you should never be afraid. ’Uyazosula izinyembezi” meaning you wipe away tears builds on the chorus let it pour, let rain till I over flow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h-6J7eDWS4
On this album she worked with Paxton on Catch me she then went on to work with multi award winning Amanda Black and the Grammy award winning Soweto Gospel Choir on her inspirational song Promised Land. Overall this is an amazing album.
